Maarket

Overview

Creating a secure platform for SMEs and customers to improve the online shopping experience.

Exploring the E-commerce and Online marketplace, Maarket is creating a secure platform for SME businesses and customers to interact, improving profit maximisation and transparency in transactions between buyers and sellers.

The Problem

Aligning needs and pain-points

From understanding the business goal of Maarket, we, as a team, came up with a simple problem statement that helped anchor us in the right direction for designing the right solution.

"How might we create a marketplace that empowers Nigerian SMEs to build trust and credibility while providing buyers with a safe, transparent shopping experience?"

To ensure the design of the Maarket platform was rooted in real user needs and pain points, I conducted comprehensive research, including a survey with 50 participants—people who regularly shop online, owners of small businesses, and others.

The goal was to gather a deep understanding of the experiences - their peculiar limitations and frustrations, as well as their desires and aspirations.

KEY FINDINGS
  • 40% had little to no knowledge about proper business registration

  • They desperately wanted a simpler way to establish credibility online.

  • "What I order vs. what I get" was a constant source of anxiety

  •  A wide spread of businesses, vendors and online sellers scam.

  • Complex e-commerce interfaces frustrated them, especially on mobile platforms

Opportunity

Gaining clarity is key

Create a platform that rebuilds trust through verification while simplifying the entire marketplace experience.

Solution

Highlighting Key Features - Buyers

Home screen

An easy-to-navigate home screen for users who want to make an order quickly. Users can navigate through different categories and check trending sales, products, and top sellers.

Negotiation-Enabled Product Pages -

Understanding that Nigerians love to negotiate, I created a seamless way for buyers to make price offers directly on product pages. This maintained the human connection that physical markets provide.

Add to Cart & Check Out Screens -

The checkout flow I designed showed all costs upfront, provided multiple payment options, and included clear delivery expectations. No surprises, no hidden fees.

Track & Manage Orders Screens -

An intuitive way to track and monitor orders, creating simplicity and convenience for users.

Highlighting Key Features - Sellers

Business Registration -

A simple business registration process for businesses to be able to enjoy the full advantage of using the Maarket app. Instead of overwhelming forms, I created a guided experience.

Business Profile -

Every verified seller gets a comprehensive profile page that showcases their products, credentials, and builds buyer's confidence. I included sections for business story, verification badges, customer reviews, and product galleries.

Tracking requests or orders -

Sellers can also manage requests that come in from buyers. Business owners have complete control over their orders with clear status indicators, easy communication tools, and streamlined fulfilment processes.

Conclusion

Iterations Based on Feedback

Navigation Refinements: Users initially struggled with the dual buyer/seller interface. I redesigned the navigation to make role-switching clearer and more intuitive.

Verification Process Improvements: Some sellers found the verification requirements unclear. I added progress indicators and explanatory content to guide them through each step.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trust is everything in emerging markets: Users need to feel secure before they'll engage

  • Cultural context matters: Nigerian shopping behaviours require different solutions than Western markets

  • Simplicity is sophisticated: Removing complexity often requires more design thinking, not less

  • Human connection can't be replaced: Digital platforms need to enable, not eliminate, personal relationships
